Bluetooth the next home automation standard?
I just read a brief article this afternoon that the bluetooth standard has been revised, revamped and ready to go after the home automation market. Could we have yet another new technology entering the market? Bluetooth makes sense for cellphones and cars but I know from my own experience that security is an issue. Lots and lots of people do not turn on security to their bluetooth devices. =)
The good part is they have more than a headstart as far as partnerships and widespread acceptance. The bad part is that it is relatively insecure and the cheapest bluetooth product I have purchased was a $79.99 headset for my cellphone. I say the more technologies the merrier.

And so the battle has begun, will it be Bluetooth or will it be Zigbee? I'm leaning toward Zigbee as it's geared more towards the small microcontrollers. The big question will be security. We already know Bluetooth has problems but what of Zigbee?

My #1 interest is voice control. Don't want to invest (time as well as money) in X10/HAL2000 system, if the new Zigbee/Insteon sytems are much better. However, I don't see any voice offerings on their websites. What do you guys know about this? Should I wait?

I assume both/all new technologies will be supported by the major software players out there. My favorite is Homseer. Time will tell but by the end of the year the software guys should be putting out updates.

IMnSHO ;-) , We'll see a lot more voice but don't expect it as a replacement for the existing interface technology (keyboard, mouse, remote, etc). I don't want to have to say my password in a place with lots of people or ask my TV to change channels when a remote is just as easy to use.
I think ZigBee, Insteon and UPB will make waves and either X10 will wake up or be washed away. I've hoping that Z-Wave get clobbered by ZigBee (but that's a personal opinion ;-). So far, from what I can tell, Insteon looks a lot like X10. The controller has a macro language (Salad, more powerful than X10's CM11A or CM15A) and the X10 stuff looks like X10 with extended commands. I'm hoping that the wireless Insteon will be where the big deal is at. I still have a lot more work to do before I can give final opinions on Insteon (I have th RS232 kit).

Hey what about UPB. Sure it's a little slower but it is so accurate and gets past all the rest of the noise on the line. I've been using it in our AirForce Central Vacuums for a few years now and love it. We now have it tied into the Home Automation system and program the vac to shut off when the phone, doorbell, or other contact closure is activated.

Don't they realize all they have to do is go to www.bluetoothbargains.combluetooth wireless get a bluetooth wireless and make driving alot easier for all of us. Soon laws will require it! I would like to add another technology to the portfolio..UWB (Ultra Wide Band)...My take is all 3 technologies Bluetooth/Zigbee/UWB will coexist with home(s)/buildings...Small homes/appts Bluetooth may win, Buildings/Large homes Zigbee may win as you need more points to be sensed, UWB will capture the living rooms in both small/big homes..

Although Bluetooth has done a lot of wonders to wireless mobile and computing, I don't think I can trust a Bluetooth connection as my security system.
